Registration Open: Finding Authenticity Writing Series

A reflection and community-centred writing experience.

Hello,

My Finding Authenticity 6-Week Writing Series is coming up, and I’d like to tell you about it.

First, you should I know that I designed this series because I find the whole notion of defining your authenticity to be completely impractical. The advice to be authentic is generally followed by the suggestion to: “figure out who are you, and be that.” I don’t know what to do with that.

So last year I began to play with designing a writing series that would give folks a chance to talk about this word that is everywhere, and to inquire (through writing poetry) into their relationship to being who you are.

I purchased ‘An Intentional Life: Five Foundations of Authenticity and Purpose’ by Dr. Lisa Kentgen and considered her ideas. Then I turned to the thoughts of poets and writers:

“I'll tell you frankly that I haven't the faintest idea who I am, but at least I know I don't know.” -- Hélene Cixous, Three Steps on the Ladder of Writing'

The first time I facilitated this series, we decided as a group that we would use this container to explore a version of authenticity that was more wild. We decided to think about our authenticity as something we allow, rather than something we do; to find a version of authenticity that was not linked to our economic value, but one that was core, simple, whole.

Every week, we reflect on 6 different topics in relation to our authenticity, including: movement, stillness, work, relationship, and play.
