Last chance to join Embodied Poetry Writing Series (2 spots left)

+ Annie Yi on discovering a love of poetry

Hello,

The Fall term of my Embodied Poetry 8-Week Writing workshop is starting today at 6pm PST and there are still 2 spaces left. More information on that below, but first…

I’d love to share a clip from the ‘Almost Grown… Up’ podcast featuring Annie Yi — artist, storyteller, and writer with the digital experience team at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC. In this clip, Annie speaks about a workshop she attended with me about 2 years ago:

“One of the first [virtual workshops] I took was this Breathe into Poetry workshop with Christine. I would not have self-described as a writer of poetry, a reader of poetry, an enjoyer of poetry. It felt very much like a form that was governed by rules that you needed a lifetime to learn… but I wanted to learn what this space was about.

…It was unlike anything I’d experienced before.

She led us through this breath work practice that loosened our breath and freed up the movement of our bodies… and then dropped us into this freewriting practice. There’s a lot that has been said about flow states, but this was one of those rare experiences where [the writing] came from some deep well of a source and came onto the page, and ever since… I knew this was a feeling I wanted to keep inhabiting and I wanted to create practices that welcomed that in.”

Listen to this clip and the full podcast episode to hear Annie speak about how she teaches folks to look at a piece of art in a way that includes themselves, trusting where their "eyes stop". If you’ve ever felt unsure of how to engage with art, I think you’ll really enjoy this conversation.

** Annie and I actually co-led a workshop a couple of months ago that combined poetry and art. More will be in the works soon.

Embodied Poetry: 8-Week Poetry Writing Workshop

Poetry belongs with the body. Rhythm can be soothing or disruptive; the sounds of language can resonate within you in a physical way that is both pleasurable and vulnerable; imagery can enliven your memories and imagination; metaphors can invite new ways of perceiving and participating in the world. And all of this is carried by your breath.

Over the next 8 weeks, you’ll:

  • reflect deeply on your relationship to the world around you,

  • explore how to use expressive language to enhance and define your experience,

  • notice the relationship between poetry and the body,

  • read poetry by poets from around the world,

  • and implement a weekly writing ritual that is both nourishing and joyous.

There are just 2 spots left in this workshop. Want to join us?
We meet every Thursday from 6-8:30pm PST. First session is today.
